We still remember sitting in Danny's back in 1995 when one of the bartenders started this track named "Leave Home" on the bar's cruddy stereo system. Back then, Danny's was basically a punk-rock house party every night, and the aggressive electronic song that suddenly tumbled forth stunned the entire room. We didn't know quite what to make of it, but we realized that someone had finally successfully synthesized a dance track with a rock and/or...

Memorial Day weekend is nigh! That means summer is officially here and girl-watching season is in full force. We thought we’d dedicate today’s EOYW to all the ladies who make summer worthwhile. Amanda Leigh Moore has been cultivating that girl next door image her entire life. We’re not sure how Mandy has managed to avoid the pitfalls of excess that other Hollywood divas her age seem to revel in, but this movie and television star...

Dear Kanye, We love you. We’re your hometown fans. We get that you have to have vision and determination to make it to the top in the music industry. We understand the ego that goes with great talent. But, it’s time for a carefrontation. There was your issue with losing the American Music Awards' Best New Artist category to Gretchen Wilson. We thought it was a little bit odd to threaten the Grammy voters right...

LAist is flashing a sad peace out to their editor Carolyn Kellogg with one hand and bumping knuckles with their new head typist L.A. blogger king Tony Pierce with the other. Where do ist editors go when they hang up the 'editorial we'? They take on MySpace, apparently. At least Ben Brown does. Austinist reminds of the just rewards of less savory careers this week and then they witness the Arctic Monkeys and We Are...

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about Transitions Bookplace going through an icky transition of its own. Well, things have changed, and an angel (if you believe, clap your hands!) has come to save them. An anonymous benefactor has given them enough money to keep afloat (plus some), and is only asking for 1% ownership. We’re glad to hear Transitions is staying open, because otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to see real-life Medium, Allison...

Elizabeth Berg is a true Chicago treasure. Originally from Minnesota, but now settled here, she has written over sixteen books, is listed by current best-selling authors as one of their “favorite” writers, and of course, the ultimate for any novelist (or no), her novel “Open House” was one of Oprah’s Book Club books. Now, we’re kidding of course, it’s not the ultimate, but it sure doesn’t hurt, and we won’t knock anyone or anything that’s getting people to read. So, here’s a quick shout out to Oprah, book clubs and those McDonalds paper-tray-placemat things.

It’s no secret that dancey rock and/or roll is all the rage with the kids these days. It’s also no secret that the bands practicing this style of music are dealing with critical assaults of the knee-jerk variety. For example, the more loved a band is by the proletariat the more loathed it is by the critical establishment. View the disdain hurled upon groups like The Killers and stellastarr* and the accolades showered upon Bloc...

Ending the concerts at Taste of Chicago this year was Moby. Chicagoist braved the thunderstorm watch and intermittent showers to go see this short, but sweet show on Monday. Moby joked about the weather before starting "Raining Again". Well aware of his reputation for talking too much between songs, Moby continued the banter by saying that when performing where fried dough is sold that cover songs are called for and then let Darren Murphy take...

Do you feel intimidated walking into Reckless Records? Did you cry soft tears of recognition during the “I Just Called To Say I Love You” scene in High Fidelity? Well sob no more, friend. This month’s Illinois Entertainer features an indie record label fakebook so you’ll never confuse Polyvinyl Records with Black Vinyl Records ever again (there’s a version of it posted online as well). We know there are a few labels around town they missed but perhaps these are the only ones who bothered to fill out the questionnaire. The guide tells you which labels accept unsolicited demos (almost all of them do) and what type of music they feature.
