Weekend Diversion: Only This, and Nothing More
On this day, in 1845, one of the most famous narrative poems, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. There have been many send-ups of the poem since, from a reading by Christopher Walken, it's been put to music by the Alan Parsons Project, and you can even see what it would have been like to watch Poe reading the poem himself. But we decided to revisit one of our guilty pleasures, the 1963 take on the classic by B-movie legend Roger Corman, just one of many Poe works put on film by Corman:
Weekend Diversion: The History of the Bears-Packers Rivalry
The last time the Chicago Bears battled the Green Bay Packers in post-season action, the Bears still played at Wrigley Field and it was just a mere 8 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Weekend Diversion: Happy Birthday, Robert Louis Stevenson
Scottish novelist and poet Robert Louis Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850, and would have been 160 years old today if only he had been one of the Immortals and not prone to the cerebral hemorrhage that brought him down at the age of 44. While Google is honoring the author of with a fancy ass doodle, we decided to celebrate his birthday by presenting you with the creepiest reading of a Stevenson poem that you're ever, ever going to witness:
Weekend Diversion: Daylight Saving Time
Back in our halcyon days of retail employment, we remember working Daylight Saving Time Sundays and having people show up to the store before opening, and proceeding to get incredibly pissy that the door was locked -- that is, until we reminded them that they were dolts that hadn't set their clocks back. Seems like the moon has the same problem (some NSFW language):
