Where the Wild Things Are Paraphernalia Galore

When a trailer for the upcoming cine-adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are debuted online this spring it caused a minor sensation, with everyone going nuts about its use of an Arcade Fire song and the decidedly non-CGI looking creatures. Although we were frankly disappointed by the Dave Eggers-penned Away We Go we're still genuinely excited; because, luckily, Spike Jonze is no Sam Mendes. In fact we haven't been this anxious to see a book-to-movie project since ... well, Wes Anderson's upcoming Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Okay, so there's not really a Wes Anderson film festival. But if there was? This would be the best preview we could think of.

This is the year to put your gift budget on a low-carb diet. And we're here to help. Shortly after Thanksgiving we'll have a whole gift guide for your perusal, but in the meanwhile we came across a sale that's too good not to share.

Columbia College will be putting on Round 10 of its fantastic Cinema Slapdown series this Friday, April 18th. This edition features Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums followed by a spirited debate between Sheldon Patinkin and Tim Kazurinsky (Sweetchuck!) over the movie's merits (or lack thereof). Previous entries in the series have included Crash, It's A Wonderful Life, and SuperFly.

Clear your afternoon: Gapers Block's own Naz Hamid is facing off against Chris Glass in another round of Layer Tennis from our pals over at Coudal. Whew! That was a lot of internet in one sentence. The match starts at 2pm. Go Naz! Qué es Layer Tennis? It's immediate, competitive--but classy--design! Like the inside of Wes Anderson's brain, only less affected and without possible subtle racism. The artists swap a file back and forth; each...

It's been three long years between features for Wes Anderson. But the wait is almost over—The Darjeeling Limited comes out next Friday. But, if you're lucky, you might get to see it early. This Saturday at TeaGschwendner in Lincoln Park The Darjeeling Limited is throwing a tea party. A $5 cover gets you access to "Darjeeling tea-tasting stations, petite Indian delectables, raffle prizes and trailer sneak peeks." And a pass to a free screening to...

Which is better, words or music?

The Chicago International Film Festival has a “sneak peek” on their website of the films that will screen at the festival this October. This year’s theme is “Film Capital of the World.” Wow. We get one Batman prequel and a Vince Vaughn flick and hyperbole breaks out faster at the Chicago Film Office than a teenage girl does on the day of Prom. Opening the fest will be the new Cameron Crowe film, Elizabethtown. We’re...

Michael Mann’s skill for finding the noir-ish Los Angeles of In A Lonely Place and Chinatown among the fake tits and fake friends of modern-day L.A. remains his calling card. But before hitting the L.A. streets, Mann flexed his muscles on the urban landscape of Chicago with the television show Crime Story and the movie Thief. Hallmarks of Mann’s films can be found in both works: the career criminal pulling one last job; the hunter...

Is there a bigger double-edged sword in any live music scene than the cover band and its fraternal twin, the tribute band? You could decide to form Safety Dancers: A Tribute To Men Without Hats and though you’d still have a built-in audience most clubs (at least the ones that don’t feature a “quarter draft night”) would be reluctant to book you because no matter how hard you work you’ll still be derisively referred to as “just a cover band.” With live band karaoke now the rage, most bands are finding that they have to bring a unique spin to the artists they cover in order to separate themselves from the pack.

Theres just too much good stuff going on this weekend to sit inside and enjoy the air-conditioning. And most of this good stuff is happening at two places: the Metro and the Music Box. So Chicagoist suggests you just camp out on the North Side for the next few days. Tonight, Metro has the MC5 reunion tour (with Lemonhead Evan Dando thrown in for good measure) and hyped young bands Franz Ferdinand tomorrow (in a sold-out show, sorry procrastinating hipsters) and the Secret Machines on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Music Box as part of their great Weekend Matinee series will show Jim Jarmuschs wonderful Canterbury Tales-inspired Mystery Train on Saturday and Sunday, and play Wes Andersons droll, under-appreciated Bottle Rocket tonight and tomorrow at midnight. Trust us, with so much hip music and deadpan comedy, youll feel cool enough without your beloved A.C.
