The Polar Express: The Day After

What is understood doesn't need to be discussed. And, if you happened to go outside yesterday, you know that it was pretty bad from about noon through now. But we will share with you what havoc the weather did wreak yesterday, besides raising the heart rates of people who shoveled their sidewalks and driveways (twice right here) or the kids who, like folks at nearby Henry C. Palmisano Nature Park in Bridgeport, took advantage of the weather to toboggan and sled. more ›

Snow Kidding: More On The Way

Snow Kidding: More On The Way

The Atlantic coast suffered the brunt of this past weekend's snowstorm but it looks like the Midwest is about to get its fair share of the white stuff. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for what it's calling a "long duration winter storm." The snow will start late to overnight tonight but will be heaviest tomorrow afternoon and evening. By the time it all tapers off Wednesday, most of the area chould have 6 to 12 inches of snow on the ground. High winds tomorrow will cause hazardous driving conditions tomorrow so if you have to be out on the road, be careful. more ›

Snowfall Fall Out

Snowfall Fall Out

As the snow still falls and we prepare for the lake-effect portion of the storm - which may drop another 4-5 inches on us by this time tomorrow - already we're seeing the effects of the storm. Besides the traffic snarls here in the city, the Illinois State Police have already enacted their Emergency Snow Plan. The plan asks that motorists involved in minor incidents that don't involve injury don't call 911 tor police assistance unless absolutely necessary; motorists should still exchange insurance information. Meanwhile, plows are out in force across city and state roads, trying to clear the way. Air traffic has also been thrown into chaos with 500 flights already canceled between both O'Hare and Midway. If you're unlucky enough to be scheduled to fly today, be sure to check in with your airline. more ›

Biggest Snow Storm Ever!

Biggest Snow Storm Ever!

This time it's for real. Probably. The snow we were supposed to see yesterday is actually coming today and local weathermen (and weatherwomen) are predicting even more snow than initially reported. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 6pm today with up to 12 inches of snow in the forecast. With temperatures at or below freezing, the snow will be wet, heavy and mixed with ice. Bleh. Strong winds are also in the forecast creating heavy drifting and as meteorologist Ryan Brumer puts it, "a mess coming home for the rush hour." Over 500 flights at O'Hare were canceled this morning as the storm threatens to produce one of the city's biggest snows of the last nine years. And while the worst of it is expected to be over by this evening, brace yourselves for light snow the rest of the week. more ›

Temps Dropping, Snow Coming

Temps Dropping, Snow Coming

This morning's not-too-brutal weather is a lie. A lie! Because starting around 3pm, temperatures are going to be falling, fast*, into the single digits. It's also going to start snowing, and winds will be gusting around 50 mph. Overnight, temperatures will be around 3 degrees, which putswind chill in the -24 degree zone. The National Weather service has issued a winter storm warning, and remember: even if the snow doesn't stick, it's going to be "blowing snow," which makes travel hazardous. And a total drag. Chicagoist Weekend Blotter

Chicagoist Weekend Blotter

How 'bout that weather, Chicago? OK, we'll shut up now. A armed 19-year-old man holed himself up in his mother's apartment overnight with four hostages, but let them go without incident Sunday morning. Police responded to reports of a man with a gun at a four-unit building in the South Shore neighborhood around 1 a.m. The man in question gained access to his mother's place and locked himself in with three of his siblings, two... more ›

Pat Quinn Rides Again

Pat Quinn Rides Again

Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn continues to swing the whooping stick, taking shots at big business for gouging customers. Last month he scolded Exelon's CEO for claiming that without hiking rates the utility company could go bankrupt, despite pulling down an Alex Rodriguez salary. "The head of ComEd [Exelon chairman John Rowe] makes $27 million a year. It'll take him one minute of his salary to pay the higher electric rates," he said. Then last week, he said downstate power provider Ameren should pay fines out of the executive kitty for not fixing winter storm power outages quickly enough. Now, he wants banks to eliminate ATM surcharges. more ›

Friday Brings Overnight Parking Freezeout

Friday Brings Overnight Parking Freezeout

There's hardly anything worse than coming out of a building to find your car ... gone. At first panicked flush, there's the thought — stolen? But if you're anything like we are, and you've never owned anything in the realm of new, the next thought is — where's the sign? The hydrant? The yellow curb? How could I possibly have screwed this up!? more ›
