The Morning After: Bulls, 'Hawks Best Foes

The Morning After: Bulls, 'Hawks Best Foes

It was a dramatic win on Friday night for the Blackhawks as they beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in a shoot-out. The Devils took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but it would be the only goal Antti Niemi would allow all night. After going the entire night scoreless, the 'Hawks caught a break with less than 30 seconds left when a Kris Versteeg shot deflected off the skate of New Jersey's Mike Mottau and past Devils goalie Martin Brodeur - thanks to a little nudge on Mottau from Jonathan Toews - to tie the game at 1-1. Once the game went to shoot-out, it was once again Toews who would play an important part, scoring the only goal for either team and Niemi was only forced to make one save in the shoot-out to clinch the victory. Overall Niemi had 32 saves on the night. It was also the first NHL game in a little over nine years without a penalty. With the win, the 'Hawks are three points away from clinching their first division title since 1993 and are three points back of San Jose for first place in the Western Conference. Next up is an Easter afternoon affair against the Calgary Flames (2 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Morning After: Bulls Streak Snapped, Agosto Finishes Fourth

The Washington Wizards derailed the Bulls' four-game win streak last night with a 101-95 victory over Chicago. The Bulls led by as many as 12 points late in the first half and by 10 at the half, but the Wizards rode a 14-2 run to start the second half to take the lead back early in the third. The Bulls managed to trim a large late Wizards lead down to just one point with 1:55 to go but couldn't take the lead back. Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 22 points. Next up for the Bulls are the Pacers tomorrow night (7 p.m., CSN). more ›

Morning Box Score

The Bulls hit the road on a winning note after edging the Washington Wizards 121-119 in double overtime, their fourth-straight win. A tight game throughout, Washington led by as man as seven early in the fourth, but Chicago chipped away at the lead and a Derrick Rose jumper with less than 30 seconds left tied the game to force overtime. A John Salmons layup with 14 seconds left in overtime forced the second extra period where a late 5-1 run, capped by a Derrick Rose jumper with five seconds left, clinched the win for the Bulls. Rose had a monster game with 37 points, 9 rebounds, and six assists. Kirk Hinrich added 19, Joakim Noah had a 17-15, and Luol Deng added 17 points of his own. In spite of the struggles and the calls to fire Coach Vinny, the 18-20 Bulls would make the playoffs if the season ended today, sitting in eight place in the NBA's Eastern Conference and only a half-game back of seventh. The Bulls now begin their long Disney-on-Ice roadtrip, tipping off Monday at Golden State (3 p.m., WGN). more ›

Morning Box Score: Bulls Whoop Wiz

The Bulls wrapped up a successful preseason - one they played for a good part without start Derrick Rose - by whooping the Washington Wizards 93-70. Tyrus Thomas led the team with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds while Joakim Noah also had a good game with 13 points and 16 rebounds and Brad Miller chipped in 18 off the bench. The Bulls got off to an ice cold start, missing 16 of their first 18 shots, but Thomas paced the Bulls in the second, scoring 12 points, and the Bulls started the second half with a 17-0 run to jump out to a huge lead. The Bulls finished the preseason 6-2 and are now off until their season opener against San Antonio on Thursday (7 pm, TNT). Benjy will be up Monday with our season preview. more ›

In a game that surely gave Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley fits, the Blackhawks overcame an early two-goal deficit and then gave up a two-goal lead of their own en route to a 5-4 shootout loss to rival Detroit. Less than five minutes in, the Red Wings were up 2-0 but the 'Hawks stormed back for three goals to finish the period, including two from Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks then scored the only goal of the second period to take a 4-2 lead but watched it slip away as the Red Wings scored a pair of goals in the third to push the game to overtime. Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal in the shootout to clinch the victory for Detroit. Defenseman Brent Seabrook said afterward, "It's frustrating. We need to shore that up. We need to be better with the puck." more ›

As it gets closer to Halloween for LAist, a contributer recollects her tale of staring down the serial killer, Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. Other happy Los Angeles thoughts include an interview with Jack Kehler of The Big Lebowski (he was the Dude's landlord), a beautiful and magical photographic moment in... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into... more ›

Bulls Open Camp

Bulls Open Camp

With the baseball season over for Chicago's teams and the Bears only playing once a week, we're relieved that weekday sports will soon return to our sports radar. Yesterday, the Bulls opened training camp. Because of Monday night's storms, they began practice without electricity, practicing by the light of one open door in the Berto Center gym. But you know coach Scott Skiles isn't going to cut practice short simply because there ain't no light!... more ›

MJ Buys Stake in Charlotte Bobcats

MJ Buys Stake in Charlotte Bobcats

Just a few weeks ago, a former Chicagoan asked us whether we knew what MJ was up to lately, because he hadn't seen or heard anything about him in quite a while. Even here in Chicago, he'd been keeping a pretty low profile since his retirement from the Washington Wizards in 2003. Yeah, there was that motorcycle racing thing, but that's about all we've heard in the past couple years. He tried to buy the Milwaukee Bucks in 2004, and I said I was pretty sure he was still plotting his return to the NBA as an owner. more ›

Banged Up Bulls Blown Out

Banged Up Bulls Blown Out

The 106-99 score of last night's Bulls-Wizards game masks how Washington dominated the game. While the Bulls closed to within single digits at the end, they spent most of the game trailing by 20 or more. Washington first went up by 20 at 42-22 and pretty much held that margin until the Bulls started closing in during the 4th quarter. more ›

They wouldn't be the Chicago Heifers

According to reports, the WNBA may be expanding to Chicago. The women's pro basketball league is negotiating with a private ownership group to bring a team to Chicago in time for the 2006 season. Currently, most teams are owned by the league and run by the NBA teams in their markets.
