The Bulls wrapped up a successful preseason - one they played for a good part without start Derrick Rose - by whooping the Washington Wizards 93-70. Tyrus Thomas led the team with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds while Joakim Noah also had a good game with 13 points and 16 rebounds and Brad Miller chipped in 18 off the bench. The Bulls got off to an ice cold start, missing 16 of their first 18 shots, but Thomas paced the Bulls in the second, scoring 12 points, and the Bulls started the second half with a 17-0 run to jump out to a huge lead. The Bulls finished the preseason 6-2 and are now off until their season opener against San Antonio on Thursday (7 pm, TNT). Benjy will be up Monday with our season preview.

In a game that surely gave Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley fits, the Blackhawks overcame an early two-goal deficit and then gave up a two-goal lead of their own en route to a 5-4 shootout loss to rival Detroit. Less than five minutes in, the Red Wings were up 2-0 but the 'Hawks stormed back for three goals to finish the period, including two from Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks then scored the only goal of the second period to take a 4-2 lead but watched it slip away as the Red Wings scored a pair of goals in the third to push the game to overtime. Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal in the shootout to clinch the victory for Detroit. Defenseman Brent Seabrook said afterward, "It's frustrating. We need to shore that up. We need to be better with the puck."
With the baseball season over for both local teams and the Bears falling flat on their face, what's a Chicago sports fans to do? Chicagoist has turned to the Bulls — even if it's only the preseason. Through three games of their seven-game preseason schedule, we're impressed so far. With last night's 97-76 win over the Washington Wizards, the Bulls stand at 2-1. Records don't mean much during the exhibition slate — teams give extended...
As it gets closer to Halloween for LAist, a contributer recollects her tale of staring down the serial killer, Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. Must think happy thoughts -- okay, free organic chocolate chip cookies for Los Angeles -- now that's a happy thought. Other happy Los Angeles thoughts include an interview with Jack Kehler of The Big Lebowski (he was the Dude's landlord), a beautiful and magical photographic moment in...
The Chicago Fire put together a strong team performance to earn three points on the road against the defending MLS champions Houston Dynamo. Chris Rolfe tallied the lone goal in the 60th minute to propel the Fire to their best start in franchise history. After four games the Fire are 3-0-1, earning them 10 points, tying them with the New York Red Bulls (3-0-1) at the top of the seven-team Eastern conference. The Fire's previous...
Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into...
With the baseball season over for Chicago's teams and the Bears only playing once a week, we're relieved that weekday sports will soon return to our sports radar. Yesterday, the Bulls opened training camp. Because of Monday night's storms, they began practice without electricity, practicing by the light of one open door in the Berto Center gym. But you know coach Scott Skiles isn't going to cut practice short simply because there ain't no light!...
Major League Soccer selected Chicago Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens as the Player of the Month for September. Pickens is the first Chicago Fire player to earn that honor during the 2006 season. When starting goalkeeper Zach Thornton injured his quadricep, Matt Pickens answered the call, getting his first MLS start of 2006 on September 3 in a game that had the Fire defeating the N.Y. Red Bulls 2-1. Matt Pickens was rewarded by Major League...
When the tubes of the Interwebs stretch all over this planet, it’s sometimes a bit odd to see some local ‘Net news.
Just a few weeks ago, a former Chicagoan asked us whether we knew what MJ was up to lately, because he hadn't seen or heard anything about him in quite a while. Even here in Chicago, he'd been keeping a pretty low profile since his retirement from the Washington Wizards in 2003. Yeah, there was that motorcycle racing thing, but that's about all we've heard in the past couple years. He tried to buy the Milwaukee Bucks in 2004, and I said I was pretty sure he was still plotting his return to the NBA as an owner.
United States National Soccer Team Manager Bruce Arena plans to announce the 23 player roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup tonight at 5pm on ESPN's Sportscenter. Arena is announcing the squad 13 days before the official roster submission date, when the rosters for all 32 teams will be finalized. We feel there are 13 players who can rest easy today as their place on the roster is a sure thing (denoted in italics below)....
The Bulls magical season came to a close Friday night as the Washington Wizards defeated the Bulls 94-91 in DC, winning the best-of-seven series 4-2. The entire game, it looked like the Bulls would hold of the Wiz and bring the series home to Chicago on Sunday. Up most of the game, the Bulls lost that lead in the final minute. Just about as soon as the final buzzer sounded, talk turned to next season's...
Chicagoist can't take this anymore! This toying with our emotions is just too much. The Bulls came THIS CLOSE to winning tonight's Game 5 against the Wizards after falling behind by more then 20 once again. A furious run in the closing minute, and the Bulls came from 10 down in the final 41 seconds to tie the game at 110! Ten points. Forty-one seconds! Really only 36 seconds because with 5.2 seconds left, Washington...
The 106-99 score of last night's Bulls-Wizards game masks how Washington dominated the game. While the Bulls closed to within single digits at the end, they spent most of the game trailing by 20 or more. Washington first went up by 20 at 42-22 and pretty much held that margin until the Bulls started closing in during the 4th quarter.
Another busy weekend for Chicago sports, so we'll just give you a brief rundown of what's happened since Friday Garland Now 5-0 The White Sox beat Detroit 8-0 on Sunday, lead by Jon Garland's second consecutive 4-hit shutout. The victory improves Garland's record to 5-0 and drops his ERA to 1.38. He's the first pitcher in the AL to 5 wins and his ERA leads the league, as well. Not bad for the Sox's 5th...
With Chicagoist in the house, the Bulls defeated the Washington Wizards 113-103 -- taking a 2-0 lead in the best of seven playoff series. That also means that Chicagoist will be partaking in a free Big Mac for lunch! Despite falling behind 17-4 in the first quarter, the Bulls rallied to take a 57-50 lead at the half. That run was sparked by the likes of Tyson Chandler, Jannero Pargo, Adrian Griffin, Erik Piatkowski and...
Man, that smarts! Just as Chicagoist is getting all excited about the Bulls in the playoffs, the Bulls announced today that Eddy Curry -- sidelined since March 30 because of an irregular heartbeat -- is out for the remainder of the season, incuding the playoffs. A press conference has been scheduled for 7:00pm this evening to give more details about Curry's situation.
In a recent Slate article, Charles P. Pierce took exception with Michael Jordan, claiming that a "soulless retirement caps his soulless career" and likening Jordan to the homogenized and corporate Las Vegas -- where he recently joined a group investing in a new Casino development.
According to reports, the WNBA may be expanding to Chicago. The women's pro basketball league is negotiating with a private ownership group to bring a team to Chicago in time for the 2006 season. Currently, most teams are owned by the league and run by the NBA teams in their markets. The league previously looked into entering Chicago under its typical arrangement, but passed when the Bulls didn't express much interest in sponsoring a team....
