Morning Box Score

Things aren't looking good for the Pale Hose right now. After yesterday's 8-3 thumping at the hands of the AL East leading New York Yankees, the Sox have lost 8 of their last 10. They were also outscored by a grand total of 23-5 in their three-game set in the Bronx. Yesterday, starter Freddy Garcia did alright, allowing three runs over six innings to the Yankees, and left the game with the Sox down only 3-2. But the bullpen let it get away as Randy Williams and Scott Linebrink combined to give up five runs in the seventh. Scott Podsednik went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Sox and Jermaine Dye belted his 25th homer of the season, but it was for naught. Next up for the Sox? A crucial series in the Metrodome against the now second-place Twins, which starts tonight at 7:10 pm (CSN).

Showing an offensive firepower the team has lacked most of the season, the Cubs exploded for 11 runs to take game two of their series with the Mets, 11-4. Starter Ryan Dempster allowed two runs in the first, but the Cubs scored a run in the second and two in the third. The Mets took two more from Dempster in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but it all came to a screeching halt in the bottom of the fifth when the Cubs exploded for six runs, four of which came on rookie Jake Fox's first career grand slam. With 10 homers, 39 RBI, and a .300 batting average in just 61 games, we have no idea why Fox isn't starting over any of the Cubs' overpaid outfielders on a regular basis. Dempster pitched six innings and striking out seven while giving up the four runs. Bradley, Ramirez, Fontenot, and Hill all joined Fox in knocking in runs. The final game of the series starts at 1:20 pm (WGN).

The Chicago Cubs have already fled the warm climate of Arizona for the spring and before they head to Houston to open the season on Monday, they made a weekend stop-over in the Big Apple. The reason? The Cubs were specially chosen to help the Yankees christen their new stadium in a pair of exhibition games before the season got into full swing. And judging by what we could see on television, the new Yankee Stadium looks a whole lot like the old one. Of course, we hear it's pretty posh on the concourse.

Answer quickly... who was the last Cubs pitcher to win 20 games?

Following their dismal 72-90 season, White Sox GM Kenny Williams has a lot of work to do to return the team to contention for 2008.

Gothamist learned about the craziest urban nightmare come true: A huge python found in the bathroom pipes. It was also a nightmare for some Yankees fans, as manger Joe Torre declined to come back and manage the Bronx Bombers. At least the city's attempt to give some direction to subway riders was interesting, pranksters went shirtless at the Fifth Avenue Abercrombie & Fitch and the I Heart Brooklyn Girls calendars came out. And just...

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out...

Baseball's trading deadline came and went quietly yesterday afternoon, with only Rob Mackowiak needing to pack up his locker in the Sox clubhouse.

Well, Chicagoist had finally come to terms with the fact that Mark Buehrle's days with the White Sox were numbered. We've heard and read the daily rumors about him being traded to the Mets, the Red Sox, the Cards, the Dodgers, the Braves, etc. While we hoped the Sox would lock up the durable lefty, his looming free agency, along with his supposed desire for a five year deal and rumors that he wanted to play for his hometown Cardinals made it seem unlikely that he'd remain on the South Side as the Sox continue to head south in the standings.

All is not well on the North Side as we all know, but things ain't much better on the South Side either. While not quite fist fights and on-field tantrums, the White Sox have resorted to some unusual measures to try and awaken their team from its slumber.

We Chicago sports fans sure didn't have very long to mourn the end of the Bulls season. Barely 12 hours later, the trash talking is reaching a fever pitch, as the Cubs and White Sox face off for the first time in 2007. Wrigley Field hosts the first installment of the city's annual crosstown showdown, beginning with Friday's matinee. The teams enter this weekend's series on opposite trajectories, with the Sox having won eight of...

The nicer the weather gets, the busier we get across the Ist-A-Verse. But we like being busy. Here's a peek at what we've been up to since last week! Chicagoist had an interview with Audrey Niffenegger, whose popular book, The Time Traveler's Wife, was based in their fine city. They also had a heated discussion about Rush Limbaugh's controversial Barack Obama parody, talked about whether Uncle Julio's Hacienda is a good place to get...

In light of the death of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock, who was driving drunk at the time of his fatal accident, many baseball teams have re-addressed their alcohol policies for players. The Cards were the first team to ban alcohol from their clubhouse in the wake of this tragedy, with the Nationals following suit. The Yankees, who already banned alcohol in the home locker room, have now banned it in the visitors' locker...

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist's London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with...

We're guessing most of you are hungover from St. Patrick's Day. We are too. But still, we're going to muddle on through our green haze and give you (drum roll please...) this Week In -ists. We start with SFist which broke the -ist record for comments with nearly 500 comments on a post about our Mayor's girlfriend. She responded back on charges that she's not a "girl's girl" and, whoo boy-- the floodgates? They...

Chicagoist is becoming increasingly concerned about Sox GM Kenny Williams and his mental state. Has he been overworked the past few years? Does he need a break? Is he trying to get himself fired? Does he covet some scouting job with the New York Mets? Otherwise, we're at a loss to explain his handling of the White Sox starting rotation since the end of last season. In early December, he traded Freddy Garcia, a workhorse...

As recently as 24 months ago, there were three baseball franchises whose fans blamed decades of World Series futility on curses. The Red Sox fans blamed the "curse of the Bambino," cast upon their franchise when the team's owner sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in order to finance a Broadway production. Since the Wilson administration, White Sox fans blamed their lack of a title on the "Black Sox" scandal, in which members of the 1919 team were accused of throwing the World Series. And the Cubs had their "Billy Goat" curse, cast upon the team after Vasili "Billy Goat" Sianis and his actual goat were denied admission to Wrigley Field for Game 4 of the 1945 World Series.

Chicagoist long ago stopped fantasizing about our beloved teams landing each disgruntled superstar, whether via free agency or trade. We've been teased by Kobe and Garnett, Deion Branch and Carlos Beltran, too many times. And sure, sometimes we've landed the big names, but for every Ben Wallace or Jim Thome there have also been Albert Belle and Nomar Garciaparra.

Chicagoist is clearly in the camp with those who believe that Dusty Baker's days as Cubs manager are numbered. With his contract expiring, the Cubs floundering and his blaming everybody but himself we just don't forsee Dusty manning the Wrigley dugout come April.

Wishing to extend our summer fun by one more weekend, Chicagoist headed down to the Live Music Capital of the World for the 5th Annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. The lineup was similar to that of Lollapalooza and gave us a chance to see a couple of bands we missed there, as well as enough new ones to keep us running from stage to stage. The ACL Music Fest is set up in Austin's...

Last week, we brought you the great news that Chicago was named the #1 Sports City by The Sporting News. TSN is holding a ceremony prior to Wednesday's White Sox - Yankees game at U.S. Cellular Field to honor our fair city.

It's just about that quietest period of the sports year, that point between when the Bears season ends and the Cubs and Sox report to Spring Training. Especially in these years where the Bulls and Hawks are nothing special. Yeah, there's the Super Bowl coming up but when it's Pittsburgh against Seattle, how much pre-game hype can one handle? For us, it's basically a one-day event.

"To the victor goes the spoils", indeed. Jon Garland avoided arbitration this offseason, signing a three-year, $29 million dollar contract with the White Sox yesterday. This year Garland had the breakout season that everyone expected of him when he was drafted by the Cubs then later traded to the Sox. Even though he had a subpar second half, Garland still finished with a record of 18-10 with a 3.50 ERA and a league-leading three...

Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's?

In their second statement game in as many weeks, the Bears proved once again that they are a force in the NFC as they beat Tampa Bay 13-10 in Tampa. Both teams entered the game with 7-3 records, and again the Bears proved that their defense can win them games almost single handedly.

Friday marked the opening of free agency for Major League Baseball. Coming off a 40 Homer, 100 RBI regular season and a huge post-season capped by the White Sox World Series Championship, Paul Konerko is one of the hottest commodities on the market. As soon as the ball hit his mitt for the final out, questions came about whether the Sox could retain their offensive star. While Konerko personified the no-ego, play-hard type of player...
