Tonight Lincoln Hall features a trio of must-see bands; one local, one from Brooklyn and one traveling all the way here from Australia. Opening the evening is YAWN, a band we've covered extensively (and always well worth checking out) so let's move on to the out-of-towners.
Dive Deep Into Pond, Stay For The Oberhofer
Converse Features YAWN In Short Film Series
Local psych-pop quartet YAWN is the first band to star in Converse’s video project, Rubber Meets the Road, in which emerging bands travel to Brooklyn to record in the company’s studio for free.
YAWN Wants You To Remix Its Album
Local quartet YAWN released their first full-length Open Season back in August, winning over even the most cynical critics with its dreamy, psychedelic, electro-heavy beats. Now, the band has released all the stems to the latest album in hopes that you’ll remix them for a new remix album.
YAWN's Debut Anything But
While a number of our correspondents are already converts to the house of YAWN, this critic is a relative latecomer to their party. Descriptions of the band being favorably compared to ethereal psychesters Animal Collective did not exactly send us rushing to consume YAWN’s earlier work, and we admit it colored our perception upon hearing their EPs as they were released. But upon hearing their full-length debut Open Season we are humbly reminded that we should not judge a musical group by a critic’s attempt at comparison.
YAWN Ready Official Full-Length LP For August
After two well-received EPs, both of which were made available for free online, Chicago quartet YAWN have announced an official full length, titled Open Season, set for release on August 30th.
YAWN's “Toys” Video Spans Continents
The guys from YAWN sure know how to milk it. The local psych-pop four-piece released their self-titled debut EP back in 2009 and have been riding the wave since, even reviving the debut last May by releasing a remix of the EP. And now in 2011, they’ve released a video for the EP’s opening track, “Toys.”
YAWN's New Video A Hodgepodge Of Pop-cultural Oddities
Chicagoans are probably sick of hearing about local indie Afro-poppers YAWN, what with their Pitchfork-driven accolades, their recent profile in the Reader, and this very here web rag taking a crack at reviewing their new remix EP. But when you self-released videos as out there as the one for “Kind Of Guy”, which premiered yesterday on P4K, you’re bound to generate at least some discussion
Weekend Dance Party: Life During Wartime Hits The Hideout
We assume, what with all the sporting events, parades, festivals and the like, that your plate this weekend is full - a near smorgasbord. We'd sympathize, but being the busy-bodies that we are, we’re going to add a little hearty gravy to that plate (made with seitan for you non-meat-eaters) - and, just like Mother, we aren't letting you leave the table till it's all gone. So open wide, your weekend just got that much more cumbersome with Life During Wartime at The Hideout, this week’s pick for Weekend Dance Party.
Rockin' Our Turntable: YAWN Remix
It may seem premature for a band with only a self-distributed EP to its name, but then again, there are very few groups gaining the kind of buzz that Chicago quartet Yawn are gaining. Like fellow art-minded popsters Netherfriends, Yawn are the beneficiaries of good timing in addition to their musical talents. As a group, they very much traffic in the Beach Boy-harmonies-meets-African-rhythm amalgamation that’s put more nationally-known groups like Yeasayer and Animal Collective at the forefront of music nerd consciousness.
DOWNLOAD Then See: YAWN
We stopped by Post in Pilsen Saturday night to see Tiny Concepts, a solo minimalist experimental act who just happens to be a delicate little French girl from Brittany. But we were delightfully surprised to find that local outfit, YAWN, was headlining this discreet gallery show. Their performance was truly the highlight of the night and they proved that, despite their youthful appearance and demeanor, they’re actually serious, experienced musicians.
Jailed Yawner Released
Clifton Williams, the man recently jailed for The Yawn Heard 'Round The World in a Will County courtroom, has been released. The release was ordered by the same judge, Will County Judge Daniel Rozak, who has quite the track record of throwing people in jail for contempt of court violations. According to the Tribune, Rozak usually asks for an apology from the offender, but this time let the yawner off with a simple stern lecture: "I just first of all want to make it clear: You were never in custody for yawning, you never were. It was a sound ... that was offensive to the court." Williams served 21 days for the offending yawn.
