Dave Warwak was just another mild-mannered middle school art teacher in Anywhere, USA (actually Fox River Grove Middle School in McHenry County). Then, in January, he switched to a vegan diet, sold his boat and fishing tackle from his side job as a fishing guide, and became politicized on the issue of animal rights. Last week Warwak handed his students a book by John Robbins titled The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save...

While the politicians in Springfield keep fighting with each other over the impending deterioration of our ability to actually get around our city, Barack Obama was getting down with Oprah Winfrey (and raising big bucks) in California this weekend. 1500 people showed up at Oprah's estate in Montecito, Calif., on Saturday night to dine on mini-hamburgers, chicken tenders, and corn on the cob, to dance to the musical stylings of Stevie Wonder, and to give...
Richard Buckner ain’t your porch-sitting, whiskey-sipping, long-lost-love-ruing folk singer - he’s the sound of an adulthood spent clawing through the shadowy underside of America in search of the indefinable sense of self and place. Buckner’s eighth studio effort, Meadow, was recently released on indie hipmonster Merge Records, and is the latest chapter the ever-evolving tale of disappearing comfort and aggravated desire that makes Buckner a favorite soundtrack to coffee Sunday mornings and late night therapy sessions. This complexity is brought to life by a band that's a veritable who’s-who of fundamental players in independent music: Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde); Kevin March (GBV, Those Bastard Souls, Dambuilders); JD Foster, and Steven Goulding (Mekons, Gram Parker, Waco Brothers).
The ABC network announced Friday that Oprah is making the long expected foray into prime time television. The two shows were explained in a press release issued by the Walt Disney company and Harpo. The first show, which seems to be in a pretty firm state, is going to be titled "The Big Give." Nothing surprising there. The premise of the reality show is to have contestants dole out large sums of money in innovative and compassionate ways. Basically, who can act like Oprah, best.
Yesterday local record label Touch and Go announced its plans for a "This Is Your Life"-style 25th Anniversary show that will coincide with the Hideout’s tenth anniversary and its annual block party in September. From September 8th through September 10th, 25 past and present Touch and Go artists will play at the Hideout. So far, nine artists have been announced including Didjits and Scratch Acid (each with all their original members), Enon, Shellac, Calexico and...
In addition to their Annual Christmas Show, the Music Box continues its Cary Grant Centennial Celebration and wraps up its Bergman Directs! series this weekend (What’s with that exclamation point? Does this mean we can expect Bogart Acts! or Janusz Kaminski Cinematographizes! sometime soon?). Both events feature perfect films for those who enjoy romance pictures that are just a little off-kilter.
