City of Chicago Eliminates 800 Jobs

By Rachelle Bowden in News on May 13, 2004 12:22PM

This year, 2,440 longstanding city employees took advantage of Chicago's early retirement program, saving the city $30 million. City Hall has said that they will permanently eliminate 800 positions from the payroll and continue to fill the rest. Without the early retirement program, the city would have needed to make up to 800 layoffs to balance the budget. Or.. maybe we could just open a cash cow casino downtown!
