Two Chicago gang officers were pursuing a gunman in a high-speed chase when they accidentally hit two kids crossing Grand Avenue between North and Kostner avenues. Witnesses at the scene say that the children ran out from behind a minivan that was stacked with mattresses on top of it. Upon impact, both children were tossed into the air. The victims are an 8 year old boy and an 11 year old girl. The boy is in critical condition and on life support while the girl remained in serious condition this morning. The police officers driving the car, which did have it's lights and siren on, are now on paid administrative leave.
Research shows that every year 6,000 pedestrians are killed and 90,000 are injured. Chicagoist reminds you to always look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street.
