Agent Mulder, Please

2004_07_08.crystal.jpgA Kane County psychic/spiritual advisor has filed suit to block a city ordinance that bans fortunetelling. St. Charles has a law on the books that states, “No person shall perform or practice within the city as a fortuneteller, clairvoyant, spirit medium, necromancer, seer, astrologist, palmist, prophet or in any other pretended art of telling past, present or future events of another's life or affairs, to obtain money or property by fraudulent devices or practices." Wha? No necromancing? Aw, rats.
Loretta Adams wants to have a fortunetelling booth at the Kane County fair in St. Charles, but that pesky ordinance is holding her back. The fair is only five days away, so her attorney doesn’t expect to make the cut this year, but she’s also interested in opening a psychic bookstore, where you can just pick up a book, hold it against your forehead, and immediately know what’s in it.
According to Adams’s attorney, a similar ordinance in Milwaukee was overturned in 1997, so hopes are high in the psychic community. Although when consulted, the Chicagoist Magic 8-ball said to ask again later.
