Baby I'm About To Have Me Some Fun

Man, five o'clock cannot come fast enough. We love when the weekend is brimming with autumnal goodness, and we can't help but celebrate by using overly cheesy and obvious icons. Here are three of our picks for the oh-so-enjoyable last weekend in September:

2004_09_24.music.jpg++ Hideout Block Party. A $10 donation (which goes to the charities CAUSES/P.L.A.Y., Tuesday's Child, and Literacy Works), and you get to see a slew of rockass bands? Count us in. This year's line-up includes Califone (tonight at 8:30), Marah (also tonight, at 9:15), Mahjongg (tomorrow at 9:30), and eight bands from Bloodshot Records (all day Sunday). Chicagoist saw Mahjongg at the Fireside in July and they knocked our socks off with blasts of awesomeness.

2004_09_24.wine.jpg++ Printers Row Speakeasy Fest. Tickets are a little on the pricey side—$20 if you want to drink, $15 if you're in costume—but you get discounts and specials at Blackie's, Dearborn Station, Bar Louie, Hackney's, Gourmand, Printer's Row Pharmacy, Kasey's, and Trattoria. Not to be obvs, but what the hell is Bar Louie doing on that list? Anyway, there will be comedy from the 20s and 30s at Blackie's, jazz at Dearborn Station, and an art auction at Gourmand. We know you've been waiting to bust out your Jordan Baker costume, so now's your chance.

2004_09_24.movie.movie++ Spike & Mike's Twisted Festival of Animation. Oh yeah. That's not am "ooh, I remember" oh yeah, that's an oh yeah of elation and geekdom. According to the Reader, this year's fest includes "Lane Nakamura's Snowman, Ignacio Ferreras' French How to Cope With Death, Andrew Silke and David Clayton's Cane Toad (from Australia), Robert Rhine and Frank Forte's Sickcom, Jim Lujan's Mama I'm a Thug, Kell McGregor's Heavy, Debbie Bruce and Nathalie Repp's Peepshow, two shorts by Bill Plympton, and, partially in 3-D, Breehn Burns and Jason Johnson's Here Comes Dr. Tran." Sweet. It starts tonight and runs through Thursday at the Music Box.
