Sound of Silence

Less than a week after agreeing to return to the Cubs broadcast booth, Steve Stone reversed course and resigned as the Cubs TV analyst. According to sources, Stone felt the situation remained too tense between him and members of the organization following a number of run-ins with players and coached this season over some of Stone's on-air comments. However, he didn't give his reason in an open letter to Cubs fans released by Stone.
In moving on, Stone ends a 30 year relationship with the organization, which began in 1974 as a pitcher and saw him enter the booth in 1983.
So this leaves the Cubs with an empty broadcast booth at the moment, as Chip Caray annouced he was moving on to Atlanta just prior to the end of the season. Believing that their TV job opening was the plum assignment in all of major league baseball, the Cubs had been taking a "Call us, we won't call you" position, waiting for announcers to contact them to express interest in the job before considering them. But with two openings, Chicagoist thinks that maybe the Cubs need to be a bit more proactive. And consider this Chicagoist's expressing interest in the job. Sure were a Sox fan, but what baseball fan wouldn't want to watch 162 games (half those in Wrigley), spew random baseball trivia, and get paid for it? Sign us up!
