DJ Hopes to Make Friends, Meet Chicks

DJ the Dolphin - Photo: duluthsuperior.comDJ is an 8-year-old dolphin who on Sunday moved from the Minnesota Zoo to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Why the move? DJ's trainers are hoping that he'll be able to strike up a friendship with the male dolphins in Chicago.. and they're also hoping he'll meet some lady friends and procreate.

DJ is a loner in the Minnesota Zoo's dolphin group. Two other older bully dolphin males, Semo and Chinook, excluded DJ, sometimes agressively, and wouldn't be friends with him. Kind of reminds Chicagoist of our Junior High years! Friendship is important to dolphins. In the wild male dolphins often buddy up with other males who are about their same age and these bonds often last a lifetime. At the Minnesota Zoo, DJ is a social misfit because the females tend to stick together and the male dolphins are older than he is. DJ was getting a frequent ass kicking by Chinook who bit him and had even tried to beach him. Poor thing.

Apparently, one bachelor dolphin swimming by itself is not as impressive to female dolphins as two .. so trainers are hoping that moving DJ will also improve his chances of scoring with the chicks. Seems like he's having problems catching any action in Minnesota.

So Chicago it is.. at the Brookfield Zoo there is a male dolphin, Kai, who is 10 years old. We're hoping he and DJ become friends and DJ starts getting more dolphin booty than he can handle!
