New Legislators Climb The Hill

It's an exciting time for new legislators in Washington, DC. Walking the halls of the Capitol, meeting other members of Congress, endless briefings, finding the bathrooms, and giant lobbyist-paid-for buffets in between those briefings. Always try the shrimp, Chicagoist advises.
Illinois' three new federal legislators started their official orientation to DC this weekend and were naturally giddy with anticipation of all the great things they can do for their constituents. There's rarely any real business done during these orientation sessions, other than acclimating to a new city and the rhythms of Capitol Hill -- and schmoozing like crazy.
Since the old Members still hold office until January, the Members-elect don't even get an office, except for a desk and phone in the basement of the Rayburn House Office Building for House Members. Committee assignments generally aren't made known until the first of the new year, and sometimes later, since freshmen get whatever is left over from more senior members.
Still, Obama and Bean in Congress -- cool stuff!
