We're Doomed

On the days when Chicagoist indulges the little ten-year old boy inside of our collective self (we call him Renaldo), we like to pretend that we have a secret identity that allows us to roam the city at night and fight crime. We put on a cool mask and cape to hide our alter ego and run around our apartment yelling “Have no fear, citizens! The Blogger-er is here!” until our significant other gets home and tells us to cut it out or there will be a revocation of carnal privileges.
We’re not sure if this is how MF Doom got started but it seems like a strong possibility. Wearing a steel mask to conceal his face (perhaps he uses the same costumers as Daft Punk?), MF Doom (nee Daniel Dumile) broke wide with a pair of releases that made many critics’ top 10 lists last year: his own MM…Food and Madvillainy, his collabo(ration) with DJ Madlib. While mainstream hip-hop headlines in 2004 were dominated by the preening horniness of Usher and the ego-tastic production of Kayne West, MF Doom’s skills as an MC heed the words of KRS-One who reminds us that rap is something you do, hip-hop is something you live. His next project will find him working with DJ Danger Mouse who had his own hits from the underground last year with The Grey Album.
Unfortunately, MF Doom’s lyrical skills will take a back seat tomorrow night in a DJ set at Sonotheque. He’ll be performing at this FREE show with Kool Akiem, DJ Hier, The Twilite Tone and Tone B. Nimble. You’ll need to RSVP on the Scion site to gain admission and be sure to show up early for the 9 PM show.
