DNA Evidence.. For Reals

2005_01_crimelab.jpgMost the time if you mention "DNA evidence" to Chicagoist the first thing we think of is CSI. Then CSI: Miami. Then CSI: NY. We can't help it. We don't want to like those shows but we just get caught up and can't turn them off.

Some days, like yesterday, we're reminded that CSI is real. And DNA evidence is real. Yesterday two men who were convicted in 1990 for murder were let out of jail because DNA evidence didn't link them to the crime. Harold Hill and Dan Young were convicted of the 1990 murder of Kathy Morgan. They were sentenced to life in prison on rape and murder charges. Yesterday afternoon, Young was set free. What about Hill? Poor bastard's still got 3 years left to serve on an unrelated armed robbery charge.

The crime occurred in 1990, which was pre-DNA. The two had confessed and there was also a bite mark and a hickey that got them convicted. Hickey's are always causing problems like that, right? The charges were dropped after some scientific tests were done and failed to link Hill or Young to the crime. Let the suing begin.

DNA evidence. . in Chicago. . these things have got us started thinking again. . . when can Chicago get our own crime drama? We're talking about you, CSI: Chicago.
