Wondering why you weren't approved for that new car loan? Could be because of something that's on your credit report. So check it out - starting today, everyone in Chicago can get free credit reports as part of the Fair and Accurate Transaction Act passed by Congress in 2003.

The law allows you to get one free credit report every year from each of the 3 major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

A credit report will show if you pay your bills on time, if you've ever been sued, if you've ever filed for bankruptcy, or if you've ever been arrested. And these are the reports that creditors, employers, landlorsd, and insurers use to make judgements about you, so it's always nice to know what they're seeing.
