Ron Santo Denied Hall Pass

2004_02_sports_santo_hof.jpgToday, Ron Santo again awaited a phone call from the veterans' committee of the Baseball Hall of Fame. And just like in 2003, he failed to garner enough votes from the vets to get into the Hall.

Santo was named on 65% of the ballots, but while the most of those eligible it was still under the necessary 75% threshhold. The next veterans' committee vote will take place in 2007. Will Santo make it in next time? Hard to say...

His career stats include 342 home runs, 1331 RBIs and a .277 batting average. Not just an offensive threat, he also won 5 consecutive gold gloves at 3rd base from 1964-68.

While these numbers may not look impressive by today's steroid-enhanced standards, not many players averaged 30 home runs a year for the better part of a decade back then. Maybe by 2007, the juiced numbers will deminish and Santo's legacy will be viewed in a more accurate light.
