Homicides on the North Side

This year so far there's been a huge spike in the number of homicides on the North Side. So far there's 14 murders on the North Side when last year there were only 3 murders in the same span of time. For all of 2004, the North Side only had 25 murders so we're on track to totally shatter that number this year. Not good.

The killings on the North Side cannot be attributed to any one root cause like gangs or drugs. And they're not happening on the street. They're happening in people's homes and out at bars. Several of the homicide cases had multiple victims like the club shooting earlier in the year. A few others have been targeted killings, like in the Lefkow case.

So what do you think is happening on the South and West sides, where the murder rate is usually way higher than the North Side? That's right, the rates have dropped from last year.
