Good Thief/Bad Thief

2005_5_christian.jpgYou gotta hand it to those Christian thieves... they actually seem to have consciences. Or at least they do in the case of the Oak Park location of the Logos Christian book store chain (Chicagoist assumes that this book store is unaffiliated with LOGO, the new basic cable channel aimed at gay and lesbian viewers). Proprietor Bob Walsh owned the Logos location between 1977 and 2001, and calculates that he lost "thousands of dollars" to thieves during that time.

Walsh got one holy of a surprise this week, though, when he received a padded envelope containing an unsigned apology note and $2,000 in compensation for items taken "many years ago." Walsh was surprised, to say the least, and is now deciding (with his wife) whether to grant the money a charitable application or fund a new HVAC system for his home.

In any case, Chicagoist had no idea there was much black market demand for Christian items. Do leather bound bibles subtly change hands under tables at underground basement swap meets? Do contraband communion wafers encased in coffee grounds slip effortlessly past the snouts of trained customs hounds? Wow, we could go on and on with this one...
