The Weekend In Live Music

By Scott Smith in Arts & Entertainment on May 20, 2005 12:45PM

Chicagoist believes that a weekend just isn't a weekend without live music. Every city believes that they have the best live music, but we know that Chicago's music scene never takes a night off. Here are a few of our picks to make the weekend rock, roll, boogie or two-step.

2005_05_20_guitars.jpgAfter work on Friday, head over to the Hideout at 6 pm to see Whippoorwill featuring Kelly Kessler and Robbie Hunsinger. Kelly is a Chicago legend and this is her latest incarnation. Say hi to Lawrence while ordering the $2 PBRs.

A little bit country? Get over to Martyr's to see Old No. 8 and The Wabash Cannonballs. Old No. 8 claims to be the premiere Chicago alt-country band. Chicagoist won't get involved in that fight, but loves the name of The Wabash Cannonballs and feel that warrants at least a listening to. It's only $8 at 9 pm.

And finally to put a little flam in your buoyant - go to Crobar and dance away to the DJ stylings of Fischerspooner. Then stay around for the Brazilian Girls. For $20 at the door, you can dance your booty off and learn what all the drag queens will be wearing this year. We think everyone needs to be on top of that.

Saturday's fun continues...

Need a 60's garage fix? Then it's back to the Hideout for the Goldstars and My Record Player. Let's hope the Goldstars have put together a new set or at least have a new song to add to the mix. Chicagoist sometimes needs more noise and The Boredoms at the Logan Square Auditorium will fit that bill. But overall, Saturday seems a little sparse - so maybe just head over to any local bar and see something new for once, or just go drinking - nothing wrong with that.

More weekend plans and Chicagoist's plans for Monday after the jump.

(Thanks, Julene!)

Now onto Sunday:

The Abbey Pub has two shows with Pigface on this day of rest. Pigface is the who's who showcase of the Chicago Industrial/Goth scene's talent. They show up and rock like it's still 1994! The early show at 5:30 PM is with Noctourne, Voudou and Project 44. And the late show has Sheep on Drugs and The Countdown. Both shows feature DJ Scary Lady Sarah. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door.

More hipster than goth? Schubas can help. The Headphones featuring members of Pedro the Lion will headline. Be one of the 2005_05_20_hansard.jpgfirst to hear their new album live!

And because the rock-n-roll lifestyle doesn't take a day off and neither do we, we're already looking at Monday.

Chicagoist's personal fave of the, ahem, extended weekend is Glen Hansard of the Frames gone solo at Martyrs. Glen has the witty banter down and mixes it with some of the most emotional and heartfelt songs about life one will encounter. Is it stalking when there's a $12 cover? Nuff said.
