Baby Snatched From Mother, Found Alive in Trashcan

On Saturday night Chicagoist was watching TV when an alarm sounded, the TV muted, and an Amber Alert was announced. Little Fernando Torres, pictured here, was taken literally from his mother's arms in his family's home. So scary.

2005-05_fernando.jpgFernando's mother, Sonia Godinez, was at home Saturday afternoon waiting for her friend to come over and visit. A knock at the door, she opened it, and two men barged in. One of them covered her face and eyes and the other took 2-month-old Fernando out of Sonia's arms. Then the men fled in a little white car.

Fast forward 15 excrutiating hours later. A woman on the Southwest Side heard her dog barking early Sunday morning. She went out in the alley and heard some noises and found Fernando in a trash can. Alive and unharmed, aside from smelling like garbage, we assume. But isn't it amazing that dogs are always doing heroic shit like that and saving people's lives?

Fernando was reunited with his parents and checked out at some hospitals.. he's fine! Finally a story with a happy ending! Except the men who snatched him are still unidentified and still on the loose.
