Sox of a Different Color at Wrigley

2005_06_sports_nomar_damon.jpgChicagoist is still kind of unsure whether this weekend's Cubs - Red Sox series should've been considered the big deal many made it out to be or not. On the one hand, two storied franchises met for the first time in a very, very long time, both have long been linked by their respective curses and one of the teams just overcame their curse to finally win the World Series. On the other hand you had two teams each with high expectations entering this season, who were each just a few games over .500 entering the weekend series.

Red Sox Nation seemingly invaded the city over the weekend. Whether at the beach, Blues Fest or the two Old Town art fairs, Chicagoist saw Red Sox shirts and hats everywhere. And we didn't even journey anywhere within close proximity to Wrigley! So the Red Sox fans seemed to think it a big deal. And the Cubs fans now look up at the Red Sox as if they turned water into wine so to witness that first hand...

Ultimately, the play on the field was as explosing as the shouting between the opposing fans. The weekedn turned into one long slugfest -- with 13 homers hit in the 3 games, Johnny Damon a single away from the cycle last night, and 42 runs scored. The Cubs clobbered the Red Sox on Friday and squeaked by on Saturday before the Red Sox pounded the Cubs in front of a national ESPN audience.

Chicagoist is betting that Wrigleyville is pretty quiet today, now that Red Sox nation has retreated to New England and Cubs fans sober up, proud of a weekend that saw them take 2 of three from the reigning world champs but knowing that it means little in terms of finding an end to their curse.
