2005_06_salestax.jpgThe sales tax increase we toldya about in November - it goes into effect on Friday. Sales tax will be raising by 1/4 of a percentage point, making it 9% and one of the highest among major U.S. cities. BUT this is ONLY for the city of Chicago. .. which means that the malls in Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Skokie, EVERYWHERE will have a tax advantage over the city.

Some people think that the city's retailers will be hurt because shoppers will choose to shop in the suburbs.. but lets get real.. we're lazy.. and by the time you pay for that expensive-ass gas to get out there you've spent more than what you'd have saved on taxes.

Then again, Oak Brook might have a leg up. Sales tax there is only 7%, where in Skokie and Schaumburg it's closer to the city's new sales tax, at 8.75%
