American League Wins All Star Game

2005_07_sports_mlb_allstargame.gifAs Fox repeatedly reminded us last night, "This time, it still counts." As in the winning league's representative in the World Series gets home field advantage. So it's a good thing for the White Sox that the AL won the All Star Game 7-5 last night.

Mark Buehrle, the AL's starting pitcher, helped his team's cause by pitching two scoreless innings and earning the win. Jon Garland pitched a scoreless 6th. Paul Konerko went 0-1 as a late game replacement at first base and Scott Podsednik saw action in center field in the 9th inning but never had the opportunity to bat.

While Sox hitters went hitless, Cubs hitters had some success last night. Derrek Lee went 1-3 with a double and Aramiz Ramirez went 1-2 with a single and a walk. Neither drove in any runs or scored however. Both had been replaced as the NL mounted a late rally, cutting a 7-0 defecit to 7-5 and making AL manager Terry Francona sweat enough to bring in Mariano Rivera to record the final out of the game.
