The 97th Race to Mackinac sailing race finished up on Monday with nearly all of the 291 boats finishing the race. Last year's light winds caused nearly 1/3 of the entries to bail before the end of the race.
The first boat to reach Mackinac Island was Holua, a 68 ft. boat owned by Peter Thornton of Hinsdale, at 2:14am on Monday. However, after handicaps were factored in, Holua only came in 2nd palce in its Great Lakes 70 division. The Chicago Yacht Club provides the full results for all 18 classes.
Kutty's Ark and Retriever took home the hardware this year. Kutty's Ark, a 36-footer from Chicago's Columbia Yacht Club, won the Macinac Cup given to smaller boats. Retriever, a 52-footer won the Mackinac Trophy given to the larger boats. But the winners better watch out... it's only a matter of time before a boat named Chicagoist begins to annually dominate the race!
