Drinking, Writing, Suiciding

Chicagoist remembers getting just slightly, ahem, inebriated days before the final deadline for "ENGL 283: Advanced Fiction" and convincing ourselves and our friends that it was a great time to whip up some magical realism. We're pretty sure it would have been awesome, but we ended up getting distracted by a game of sex in a box.
The writers sharing their work tonight for "RUI: Reading Under the Influence" are probably a little more focused. Amanda Snyder, Rob Duffer, Karen Bellovich, and Joe Tower are all graduate students in Columbia College's Creative Writing Program. In addition to reading short pieces of their own, they'll be drinking shots and reading works from famous authors who have committed suicide. They'll also be asking the audience trivia questions, and rewarding correct answers with a used book or free drink. Head over to Sheffield's tonight from 7-10 for your tipsy reading pleasure. $3 gets you in.
Speaking of drinking, wordcraft, and suicide, tomorrow is ol' Ernie's birthday, and journalist John Callaway will be speaking at the Ernest Hemingway Museum in Oak Park as part of their annual birthday celebration. Callaway, who is the award-winning host of WTTW's "Chicago Stories" program will present a lecture titled “The Sun Also Sets: A Chicago Journalist Reflects On His Obsession with Hemingway.” Admission to the lecture, which starts at 7:30, is $10 or $8 for members, students, and seniors.
Finally, if you prefer your writers alive and iambic (but still in a bar), check out eyes and ears, a show tonight at the Black Rock Bar combining images and poetry. That'll start at 8:00.
