Somehow Chicagoist missed this on Friday and we were so busy over the weekend we didn't catch much news. So we were really surprised last night when we caught up and read that there were FIVE bank robberies in the area on Friday. Three of the robberies were in Chicago and two were in the suburbs. That's a lot of freaking bank robberies.. and especailly for one day!
Police are saying the robberies all appear to be unrelated. The first one happened at Mutual Financial in the southwestern suburb of Burbank. The next was at about 12:30pm at the Charter One Bank in Chinatown.
The next two were not a great distance from Chinatown and both happened at about 2:30pm. These were the ones at the Citibank at 400 N. Clark and the Bank One at 605 N. Michigan. The robbery on Michigan Ave. in broad daylight.. you can imagine the tourists and shoppers that there? Also, the Bank One is on the second floor and the only way to get to it is through a crowded lower lobby and by going up an escalator or elevator. Witnesses say that after the robbery the man fled south on Michigan, past the Gap, when the bag of cash exploded in a red mist. The man then dropped the money and kept running, blending into the crowd.
The 5th robbery happened at a Fifth Third Bank in the north west suburb of Palatine on Friday morniing.
Luckily, no one was hurt in any of the robberies. So far this year there have been around 100 bank robberies, which is a little behind last year's pace.
