When Chicagoist thinks of bad guys stealing stuff we think of gems and jewelry and money and cars. .. but it turns out these aren't the only things worth stealing around here. Four guys were charged today for stealing $100,000 of seafood and meat!
The robbers were found out when police were investigating a tip about a stolen vehicle. They found it on W. Maypole Ave. and inside was about 800 pounds of seafood and meat worth about $20,000. From there they went to W. Fulton St. and found a stolen 26 ft. refrigerated semi with 13 pallets of seafood valued at $80,000.
A bunch of the seafood stolen was Chilean sea bass. Remember that campaign a while ago - "Take a Pass on Chilean Sea Bass" ? It was trying to get you to boycot the fish bc of overfishing. Well, apparently people aren't boycotting it.. and police say it'd be super easy for these guys to drive around and say "wanna buy some fish" and sell it. Who these people are who would buy Chilean sea bass from the back of a truck, we don't know.
Anyway, the seafood & meat, or what's left of it, will be returned to its owner.
