2005_08_sports_sandberg_jersey_retirement.jpgRyne Sandberg's having quite a summer. On July 31st, the former Cubs second baseman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On Sunday, the Cubs retired Sandberg's jersey number.

At Sunday's ceremony that preceded the Cubs-Marlins game, Sandberg saw his number "23" hoisted up the right field foul pole, accepted a replica of the flag and addressed the crowd. His number joins those of Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams as the only ones retired by the Cubs. Each of the other three remain dear to Cubs fans hearts in part because of their individual excellence during times of team mediocracy, and from the standing ovation Ryno received today it seems he'll be warmly welcomed into that elite group.
