Last night at the behest of a friend, Chicagoist went to Double Door to see Nashville Pussy and Zeke. We had been regaled with fabulous stories of how great these bands are live – so we decided to check it out for ourselves.

Zeke was fun speed metal with grandstanding and indecipherable lyrics. We just checked out the lyrics online and it’s the basic cars, women, and alcohol that were being screamed about. Zeke, hailing from the Northwest, has had a lot of influence on other bands that we love such as the Supersuckers and has toured with bands from the punk extreme to the nu-metal genre.

Next up were Nashville Pussy who decided to not enter the stage and begin rawkin’, but to sit around tuning their instruments to AC/DC for quite a while. The gimmick of NP is that they have two girls on stage surrounding a Ron Jeremy look-alike and play Southern rock at it’s most raunchy and sleazy.

Their first song was a track off 2005’s Get Some, “Pussy Time” announcing to all that NP is in the house. The ensuing songs continued in the same metal/punk fest and included “Gonna Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati and Kick the Shit Outta Your Drunk Dad” (which has to be one of the longest song titles), “Come On Come On”, and “One Way Down”. Blaine Cartwright regaled us with his boring stories of appearing on Mancow earlier in the day between songs and explained that midway through “Hate and Whiskey” Mancow forced them to stop playing due to language concerns. Chicagoist became even more disappointed in Nashville Pussy when they performed “Lazy White Boy” and sounded like they were ripping off The Offspring which was so not necessary.

Chicagoist's friend mentioned that the line-up no longer contains the fire-breathing bass player of yore and we're sure that added to the spectacle and took one's mind off the less technical musicianship present on stage.

The evening was a let down because both of these bands have had such underground, word-of-mouth notoriety and neither one stood up and blew us away – hell, there was barely a breeze. If one must have pussy and metal in their rock, may we suggest Alabama Thunderpussy instead.
