it's Packer Week!

2005_12_sports_cheesehead.jpgWhile we fear certain members of the staff might be hiding giant triangular hunks of yellow foam in their closets, Chicagoist is getting excited for Sunday's Bears - Packers game. The Bears enter the game riding a 7-game winning streak and an 8-3 record. The Packers limp in at 2-9. So it should be a Bears romp, right?

We certainly hope so, but the Bears success against the Packers has been nonexistant in recent years. Since Brett Favre joined the team in 1992, the Pack have beaten the Bears 21 times in 26 meetings -- including the last 11 Bears' home games (10 at Soldier Field, 1 in Champaign). Brett Favre has been the most prolific Bear slayer, perhaps the most prolific of any player against any team in the NFL. But this year, it's different!. We think...

The Packers are mired in their first losing season since the early 90's. They've lost most of their offensive stars for the year to injury and their defense is pretty weak. The Bears stifiling defense should maul Favre. And the Bears offense should be able to put a few points on the board against a Packers D allowing over 20 points/game.

But can one ever count out Farve against the Bears? This time, we say "Yes, his moment has passed!" Sports Illustrated's Peter King either didn't get the memo or else he has a bigger man crush on Favre than even John Madden does. His 24-10 Packers victory prediction is going to look mighty silly on Monday. Chicagoist predicts that the Bears defense renders Favre ineffective, picking off a couple and running one back for a TD. The offense adds another 13 or so, so we're going to say Bears win 20-3.
