Chicagoist Presents: Ctrl-Alt-Rock
By Scott Smith in Arts & Entertainment on Jan 17, 2006 6:35PM
Chicagoist spends a lot of time acting as observer, critic and theorizer on Chicago’s local music scene. But for a few months now, we’ve been thinking about spending less time posting and more time doing. Specifically, we wanted to put on a great live show with local bands that we love. And so in that spirit:
Chicagoist presents:
Ctrl – Alt – Rock
With:
The Assembly
May Or May Not
Alphabet
When: Thursday, February 16th at 8 p.m.
Where: Schubas Tavern
Cover: $8
If you don’t know about these bands yet, you should. The Assembly re-formed in 2005 and released their album Commencement last November, combining Brit rock with that Chicago guitar crunch. May Or May Not ended up on every mix tape we made last year. They charmed their way into our hearts thanks to gorgeous pop arrangements stuffed with shimmering guitars, melodious vocals and wanderlust musings. Finally, Alphabet brings a Bowie-meets-Beck-after-being-hit-with-Pixies -guitar-lines aesthetic to the evening.
Frankly, dear reader, this show is going to rock. If you miss it, you will be sad. Chicagoist doesn’t want you to be sad. We want you to be happy. Like a kid on Christmas…who gets a pony….and a bike. A bike-riding pony. Yes, that’s what this show is: like a bike-riding pony.
So write it down on your calendar, Palm Pilot, left arm, whatever. We’ve got more stuff planned for that evening so keep reading Chicagoist in the coming weeks for more details and profiles on the bands.
