The WCR Wants You

Think you could be the next Sister Mary Jane, Punky Bruiser or Miss Conduct? Fans of A&E's new series Rollergirls know these as the ass-kickin' stars of the Holy Rollers who began the season as the returning champs of the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls league. And if you're not a fan, um, you should be.
Founded in Austin, Texas in 2001, TXRD sparked a national resurgence of women's roller derby. Elizabeth Gomez, aka Juanna Rumbel, and Kelly Simmons, aka Sister Sledgehammer, formed Chicago's Windy City Rollers (WCR) as Chicago's first all-female, flat-track roller derby team in late 2004. The league now has four teams Hell's Belles, The Fury, Manic Attackers and the Double Crossers and it's looking for a few good women to fill its ranks.
Think you've got what it takes? Or just want to support some serious local girl power? Head over to Delilahs tonight for the WCR's recruitment and fundraising party. Not sure if you'll fit in? Check out their injuries page to see if you're woman enough for this rough and tumble sport, and brush up on your derby lingo to make a good impression. Sorry, no boys allowed in the league, but you're welcome to be a volunteer. Aww.
The information session starts at 7:30, followed by a fundraiser for the league's Tucson travel team. Suggested donation is $5.
If you're more of a spectator, and it's OK if you are, check out the Globe Pubs weekly Rollergirls viewing party every Monday night.
