Eating In: Just for Sunday – Let’s call it a Hoagie

Chicagoist is not too thrilled by the football match up on Sunday. We’d care if the Bears had made it, or even if there was a team we hated, but the truth is we’re pretty much ambivalent to both teams, still, Pittsburgh is gonna take it.
So, we were thinking of what to take to the party that our friend is having. So we’re taking a simple, easy, cheap and satisfying sub sandwich. All you need is a loaf of Italian bread or a baguette, meat, cheese and some accent fixin’s to slap on it. The sub or in the Pittsburgh vernacular “hoagie” is a great platform for party food. You can take it in any direction: classic-ham, salami, turkey with jack and cheddar, lettuce and tomato; ethnic- the Italian- salami, sandwich pepperoni, mozzarella and provolone, lettuce, tomato and a little olive oil with oregano; club-turkey, bacon, avocado, sprouts ---eh, skip that, sprouts have no place at a football game; hell, we’ll say it, go vegetarian with roasted vegetables. We’re not hardcore Steelers, or we’d make it with chipped ham, which while charming in its own way, scares us just a little.
The sub, hoagie, grinder, po’boy, hero or whatever else it’s called is a great way to feed the hungry football masses, limited only your imagination and the length of your bread. (insert obvious crude joke here).
Share your favorite hoagie combinations or memories in the comments.
Enjoy.
