Biking in a Winter Wonderland

By Rachelle Bowden in News on Feb 6, 2006 2:32PM

2006_02_bike_winter.jpgEven with the recent spell of mild weather, the prospect of going for a leisurely ride on the windy winter streets might be a tough sell to well, basically anyone except hardcore bikers.

Never fear, though, this is Chicago, and there is always someone as crazy as you to ride around with. Chicago Bike Winter picks up where fair-weather riders leave off, promoting bike riding in all seasons. The group has events, like riding to all the chocolate hot spots in Chicago on a "Chocolate Ride," or a quick trip to Milwaukee in their annual "Frozen Snot Century." There's more where that came from, besides the Critical and Pilsen mass each month.

Making frozen snot fun again sounds great, and so do the winter bike riding tips on the website. Also, at the first sign of two inches of snow or more and anyone who wants to can meet for a snow day (or night) ride. Those days they meet at Handlebar, so you can steel yourself against the weather. According to the website, "The Velorution Will be Winterized." We don’t know what that means, but it sounds like a convincing argument.

Thanks, Alicia!
