The primary election is just six weeks away, kind of. A newly released Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV poll shows that, not surprisingly, Governor Blagojevich is leading Edwin Eisendrath in the Democratic primary, and State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka leads in the Republican race.

Here is a breakdown of the poll results: Democratic primary: Blagojevich 62%, Eisendrath 18%, Undecided 18%; Republican primary: Topinka 38%, Oberweis 17%, Gidwitz 11%, Brady 8%, Undecided 25%

Further polls shows that, assuming Blago and Topinka win their respective primaries, the race for governor could be tight. While previous polls have shown Blago with an edge over Topinka, a poll released this week has Topinka beating Blago 48% to 37%.

So should Blago be scared? Not yet. Topinka has been front and center lately with the first GOP debate and trying to solidify her lead over Oberweis. And Blago is a great campaigner, and we would expect him to kick it into high gear after the primary.
