Cherish Your Love

In case you hadn’t noticed, Valentine’s Day is a week away. Yeah, we're sick of it already too. Human companionship can be so exhausting. Pets are so much easier to love. Chicago shelters and rescue groups are holding several events this week – whether you’re in a relationship or still looking – to celebrate that special day.

2006_02_puppy_kitten.jpgHaven’t found the perfect partner? The Anti-Cruelty Society will host its Sweet Hearts & Furry Paws adoption event this Sunday at the PetSmart in Evanston (2221 Oakton Ave.) from 1 to 3 p.m. Or, check out Chicago Animal Care (ACC) and Control’s Meet Your Match pet adoption event at the ACC facility (2741 S. Western Ave.) from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

If you’ve already found your true love, celebrate with the Chicago Canine Rescue Foundation’s (CCRF) Valentine’s Party this Friday. This benefit will feature a photo session and CD portrait for pets and owners, a silent auction, appetizers and refreshments. The party will be held at Grubman Photography Studio (456 N. Morgan St.) from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets, $75 in advance, $80 at the door, are available on the CCRF Web site and at 773-294-9305.

Not ready to settle down? You can still get your drink on for the animals at PAWS Chicago’s Irish Eyes guest bartending fundraiser. Members of the group’s junior board will man the taps at this Lincoln Park watering hole Wednesday night, with 100 percent of tips benefiting the group.

Thanks, Joanna!
