Judy's Had It up to Here

2006_03_topinka.jpgAfter taking part in a debate Wednesday night, Judy Baar Topinka decided to not participate in any more debates or roundtables with her fellow Republican gubernatorial opponents because, she says, doing so would allow them to “bash her forever.”

Jim Oberweis is certainly going after Topinka. Oberweis has rolled out Topinka’s former chief of staff and lovah, Martin Kovarik, to say the treasurer had state employees do campaign work on the taxpayers’ dime and ordered him to shred documents related to a controversial state contract. Topinka claims she did nothing wrong, and that Kovarik vowed to destroy her after she let him go for not paying his taxes. Various outlets are tearing Kovarik’s story apart, and Oberweis was booed at a debate earlier this week when he brought up the allegations against Topinka.

It’s common for frontrunners to avoid debates, but it doesn’t seem like Topinka is so far ahead that she can safely sail through the primary without worrying about Oberweis or Gidwitz. Plus, something tells us the boys will still bash her when she’s not around to defend herself.

And it's not like Topinka isn't throwing out insults herself, referring to her Republican rivals as "a bunch of morons." So much for staying above the fray.
