Making Like Pompeii

2006_03_lava.jpgLava is closing tonight. We really wish we could get upset about this, and start ranting about how the goddamned yuppies are ruining Wicker Park and driving all the “cool kids” out, but we just don’t care all that much, And, it seems, neither does anyone else really.

The owners were kind enough to send out a press release – that has been largely ignored by the press – announcing the bar’s final days, and how the closing was totally their own idea, and how they would be opening another Lava in the Wicker Park area. In fact the owners say, “A lease will soon be signed for a new space near the intersection of Milwaukee and Ashland.” It’ll soon be signed? Why would you “voluntarily close” your doors – their words, not ours – if you didn’t even have a solid on the new location yet? The whole enterprise seems a bit sketchy to us.

But that’s not why we heave a collective sigh of “so what?” Lava pretty much played itself out a couple years ago and became just another bar without anything really special to offer anymore. We have nothing against the place, and we’re sure plenty of folks who were regulars will miss the place, we just think it sort of lost its mojo years ago.
