Get Your Field's Fix While There's Still Time

clock.jpgIn less than four months, Marshall Field’s will be no more. Some of you are sad, some are pissed, some are ambivalent. But if you’re already feeling nostalgic about the clocks, the Tiffany dome and the Walnut room, you’ve got four chances to pay your respects before the great Macy’s takeover of 2006.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation leads monthly walking tours of Marshall Field’s on State Street, and the next one happens one week from today.

Sure, there will likely be reminders of Field’s throughout the stores after the name change, and the delicious smell of Frango mints may be stronger than ever, but let’s face it, it just won’t be the same.

For instance, it may be a lot harder to find someone to help you with your purchases. Macy’s plans to lay off about 250 employees at Marshall Field’s stores in the city and suburbs. The first round of layoffs happened last Friday, and second and third rounds are scheduled for July 8 and 29.

What was that about Macy’s black awnings and Terry Lundgren’s cold soul?

No, really, we’re sure working at Field’s is just one big party these days. One big pink-slips-dipped-in-chocolate-mints party.
