Sausalito: Hidden Among Storefronts

sausalitologo.gif Chicagoist had to walk by it a few times before we realized that Sausalito was not another nail salon or random retailer, but rather a cute but clever Italian eatery and martini bar. With unassuming, but creative décor, Sausalito features golden yellow walls with rich red drapes, colorful paintings, dark wood chairs and white-clothed tables. The overall effect is a clean but design-conscious space. With warmer weather, the outdoor patio is now open (Chicagoist is all about people-watching over our meal).

Located at 543 W Diversey, Sausalito’s menu features contemporary Italian dishes, such as Chicken Sausalito (sautéed chicken with bacon, Italian sausage, sweet peppers and mushrooms in a garlic white wine sauce). However, less Italian-inspired options include Pan Roasted Tilapia (coated with bread crumbs and served with mashed potatoes), grilled pork chops and grilled New York steak. Entrees range from $14 to $18. sausalitodining.jpg

Faithfully Italian pasta dishes ($8 to $18) include simple offerings – such as cappellini pasta with tomato basil sauce and mozzarella – as well as hearty staples: penne bolognese, gnocchi with vodka cream sauce, or linguine with mussels. Classic appetizers (from $7 to $9) include fried calamari, pizza margherita and crab cakes.

However, Chicagoist's favorite menu is one we can drink, and Sausalito’s extensive martini list is available for $4.95 on Wed. and Thurs. Select from the Mango Tango, Woo Woo (peach schnapps, vodka and cranberry juice), Diversey Harbor (a dirty martini with vodka or gin) or the ever-favorite Appletini.

Other weekday specials include Monday $2 Amstel Lights and Tuesday half-priced wine bottles. With specials all week, sliding into the weekend just got a lot easier.
