Matisse: Good Deal. No Fuss.

Chicagoist is pretty easy to please. We have simple tastes and like the small pleasures in life: drink specials, good food and fun people-watching. We found all three at Matisse Tavern & Grill (674 W Diversey). Plus, we dig garden-level bars.
Down a short flight of stairs, Matisse creates a warm atmosphere with red hues and golden lighting. Although a bit narrow, the exposed brick walls and wood-burning fireplace create a cozy rather than crowded feel. The front bar features tall tables and plasma TVs, while the more spacious back area’s cushioned booths make for a laid-back, lounge vibe. Chicago might possibly have the best beer gardens and patios, and Matisse’s outdoor seating is ideal in the summertime.
However, specials are truly the way to Chicagoist’s heart, and Matisse has a different deal each day of the week. Two-for-one appetizers, $2 burgers and $3 bottles are just a few of the options. When Chicagoist stopped by on Thursday, the half-priced drinks drew a decent crowd.
In addition to our cocktails, we ordered a couple appetizers: mussels in a creamy broth and a cheesy, spinach artichoke dip. Both were tasty, although the dip began to congeal a bit as it cooled. However, the bar manager came over to our table, extremely concerned about clearing our dishes right away. We can’t argue with service like that.
Similar specials can be found at Matisse’s sister locations: Sopo, Union Park, Grand Central and Bar Celona. Clearly, management knows how to keep customers across the city fed, imbibed and happy. Works for us.
