This Month, It's a Toss Up

Sure, sometimes Chicagoist waxes promotional on the latest candy and soda to grace the convenience store aisles. But really, we know that a good diet is all about balance. The four food groups if you will. Which is why we’re taking this moment to alert you to the fact that May is National Salad Month. Now, we’re not exactly sure who is behind this observance. Dole? The Association for Dressings and Sauces?
In any case, we admit we sometimes roll our eyes at these promotional months – seems like everyone and everything has got one. But with beachwear just around the corner, it can’t hurt to get a few leafy greens in your diet. So, Chicagoist recommends in honor of Salad Month to go get yourself a heaping plate of colorful fruits and veggies.
You can make your own (one of our personal favorites), or take advantage of any of the multitude of options across the city. Chicagoist enjoys the plentiful salad bars at Treasure Island, Salad Spinners, R.J. Grunts (2056 Lincoln Park West) and Love's Yogurt (not just in the suburbs, there’s a location at Halsted and Chicago). And, say what you will about the Cheesecake Factory (long lines, touristy chain – yeah, yeah, yeah), they have a huge selection of enormous salads.
We know salad isn’t as much fun as, say, White Chocolate Kit Kats, but sometimes you just gotta be a grownup and do what’s good for you. Are you getting your five a day?
