The Chicagoist will be launching later but in the meantime please enjoy our archives.

Convince Us

bookpic.jpgWell folks, it’s the end of the month, it’s Friday, and it’s hot as underwear outside. We think we need to take a break, you know, do something fun, shake it up a little.

One of our favorite answers to the question “what do you want for your birthday?” is, “give us your favorite book, the one that had the most impact on you; the one that changed your life, made you cry, made you laugh, altered the way you think”. We always end up with some crazy book or another we never would have read in the first place.

So in honor of our birthday (which is soon approaching), we want you to recommend a book for us. We’ll read it and at the end of next month, we’ll write a review. Then we'll ask you for another book, and so on, and so on, and so on.

Here are the rules; each month will have a different genre of book. We may ask for the most romantic, or the funniest, or the saddest. You will write a few sentences in our comments section, telling us which book you picked and your reasons why.

This month, tell us which “Chicago” book is your favorite and why; anything from Dreiser to Dybek, whatever floats your boat. We’ll pick the one that convinced us the most, read it, and write a review at the end of next month.

We'll let you know which book we picked by Monday. If you convince us fast enough, we might just be able to find said book this weekend at The Newberry Library Book Fair.

Influence us, come on, you know you want to.
