Chicagoist played Little League as a kid, and dreamed about an opportunity to travel to Williamsport, Pa. -- home of the Little League World Series. More than anything, we were excited about the possibility of playing on a field with a real home run fence! But considering all the 5th and 6th place trophies from out local league still sitting in a closet at Mom & Dad's, dreams of playing on the national stage wasn't very realistic.
A group of kids from suburban Lemont will get to live out those dreams, though, after winning the Great Lakes Regional this weekend. They won 3-0 over New Castle, Ind.
The team has already arrived in Williamsport, where they'll be competing against 7 other American teams and 8 international teams. It's the first time since 1992 that a team from Illinois has made to the LLWS. Not only will they get to play on fields with fences, they even be televised on national TV! ESPN will be carrying the earlier action, while the championship game will be on ABC.
