Sox Split Key Series With Tigers

In less than 20 hours, the White Sox salvaged what was looking like an ugly series, and one that could have ended all hope for winning the AL Central title.

2006_08_sports_jermaine_dye.jpgBy outlasting the Tigers 7-5 last night, and spanking them 10-0 this afternoon, the Sox split the series after losing the first two games 4-0 and 7-1.

The White Sox remain 5 1/2 back in the AL Central standings. With only 35 games remaining, that may be too much ground to make up. But it is possible. Certainly better than 7 1/2 back.

The Sox return to U.S. Cellular after a 3-4 road trip against the Tigers and the Minnesota Twins, who currently trail the Sox by only 1 game in the wild card standings. Those two teams will face off three more times this week here in Chicago.

Unfortunately for the Sox, DH Jim Thome will be on the shelf for the series after straining his hamstring in last night's game. But we'll gladly take Thome out of the lineup if our starting pitchers (other than Garland) can limit the Twins to fewer than 4 runs a game.
