2006_09_one.jpgIf you were having trouble getting into Nordstrom’s this weekend, blame Bono. The U2 mouthpiece and his wife Ali Hewson were in town to sell ridiculously expensive T-shirts in an effort to raise money for the African village of Butha-Buthe in Lesotho, South Africa.

The T-shirts sell for $40 and are part of Bono’s dual mission to end poverty and bring attention to the AIDS problem in Africa. Ten dollars from the sale of each T-shirt will go a fund that pays for AIDS medication and health care for the workers who make the T-shirts in the African village. Bono’s no Johnny-come-lately to the plight of Africa’s poor; he first visited there in 1985 when he participated in Band Aid. Where will Bono and Ali travel in Africa next? Perhaps to Namibia, since everyone knows Namibia is for lovers.

Also on the fighting-AIDS-with-clothing front, Marshall … er, Macy’s is selling American Rag T-shirts for $18, with $10 from each sale bring donated to LIFEbeat, an organization that’s fighting AIDS. They’re also sponsoring a contest for 13-to-25-year-olds to come up with a kickin’ idea to raise money and awareness for AIDS. The winner will receive a private concert by Teddy Geiger with 10 of her friends, which seems to be something you’d give the loser. You can get more details at the world’s most irritating website (turn down your speakers first and look to the bottom right to turn off the shitty faux-rock music).
