How To Make a Grilled Fruit Sundae

2006_09_pregrill.jpgWhenever we're at the supermarket shopping for a barbecue, the one thing we consistently forget to buy is fruit. On the grill it tastes so great! And almost any large fruit will work, we hear. What we normally like to grill are peaches, but we heard that plums are good too. This weekend we also tried bananas with a brown sugar & butter coating.

2006_09_grilled_banana.jpgFor bananas, what you want to do is trim the ends, but leave the peel on. Then cut the banana lengthwise down the center, peel still on. We mixed about 2 tablespoons of melted butter with about 3 tablespoons of brown sugar and put it on the peeled side of the banana slices. When you actually go to grill the bananas, you've got to be careful because that sugar will want to burn fast. Turn the grill on high, and only leave the bananas on for a few minutes.

For peaches, just cut them in half and remove the pit. They'll take longer to cook than the bananas. Put them at a lower heat, too. Oh, and you might want to oil up the grill grates a bit to prevent them from sticking. You'll know when the peaches are done because when you squeeze them they'll be soft.

We're sure you can get much more elaborate with the sundae, but we kept it simple. A peach half, a banana half or two (peel removed), and a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream. We had some nuts in the cupboard, so we tossed a few of them on and added a drizzle of chocolate syrup that we just so happened to have in the fridge. Eat it fast because the warm fruit will melt the ice cream, but it's delicious - melted or frozen!
